In Victorian times, these plates were created to teach children all sorts of things. They were made with biblical scenes or calendars or numbers or days of the week etc. Ours show the months of the year. We were lucky to find both June and July together. Although the colouring-in of the image suggests that it might have been an apprentice piece, we think they are delightful. Perhaps a child carried out the colouring, this would be a tragedy if the child was put to work or lovely if the child was allowed to play with the colours prior to glazing. Ah, if only these plates could speak, what stories they could tell!
